Archipelago!

Hiya’s!

I would be interested in creating an Archipelago for us in SizeStation. An Archipelago is a multiplayer, multi-game randomizer – it will take all of the items, abilities, or other unlockables in a game, change where everything is located, and do this in a way that still allows the game to be completable without glitches.

However, because an Archipelago is a multi-game randomizer that’s compatible with a wide variety of different games, you can find items in your game that are needed for other people to complete theirs. For example, maybe you’re playing The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, open up a chest, and it’s the Triple Jump ability for someone playing Super Mario 64. Or you could play Pokemon Red, find an item ball on the ground, and it’s the Pick Nails which lets Rouge the Bat dig in Sonic Adventure 2. The possibilities are virtually endless!

Here is a list of games that are supported in Archipelago. You can choose whichever you want, and if multiple people want to play the same game, that’s totally fine. And yes, Paint is actually MS Paint, lol.

Archipelagos can be played asynchronously, and that’s the option I’d want to use for SizeStation. Typically, the way this works is that you play the Archipelago game for a little while, make whatever progress you can until you can’t do anything anymore, and then put the game down for a day or so until other people find your items in their games, allowing you to progress further. Being asynchronous lets everyone play on their own time, and you don’t have to worry about being particularly fast or good at the game you choose. However, do make sure you check in every so often to make progress since everyone’s support is needed! That being said, if we get stuck, it is possible to Hint to reveal item locations (or straight-up give someone an item they need).

At this stage I’m trying to gauge interest; if you’d like to play, respond on the poll! Not having experience is totally fine. I’m using that distinction mostly to figure out who might need more help setting up their game. And if you have questions or aren’t sure of how something works from my description, feel free to reply here and ask!

  • I’m interested in participating and have experience!
  • I’m interested in participating and don’t have experience!

Worth noting, a lot of games on the games list are free or emulate-able. I really like how it plays with platformers – any Zelda or Mario is a good time IMO, for example, but there are a lot of other genres represented including RPGs, a few indie games, and even a few puzzle/strategy games like Inscryption and The Witness.

Oooo nice, would have to think of a game for us to play though. Last time i did do hollowknight but not sure if we will do it this time same with monster sanctuary because we’ve just done it so many times

I am fascinated by whatever the heck it is. I don’t really understand how it would be done. Like, would we create a closed loop where we only find each other’s game items? Or do we need 1 person per game or something x3

Yah we do create a closed loop where we can find eachother’s items in the game we are playing. although they always follow logic so you cant get fully prevented from completing the game you decide on playing.

We Could play monster hunter world if we feel like suffering ig lmao

There is a list of games that are usable but not part of the main apworld system. We would not really recommend them though because they have a chance to not be fully functional/clunky to play, or harder to setup. (mentioning this because monster hunter world is one of those games)

I’m interested! It sounds fun as hell to do one with a buncha peeps!

Ho-ly. This sounds insane! I wish I had more experience with some of these games, because I bet it’s really fun to play like this! So far I only have two that I’d feel even remotely comfortable giving a chance: Final Fantasy which I’ve finished like a million times (Only the PSP and GBA versions though) and Civ VI, since I’ve put almost 400 hours into that game.

Oh right yah for those who have never done one of these before it is highly recommended to choose not only a game you’ve beaten but one you are good at. The nature of randomizers means that you are often without certain items that you’d normally have at certain points in the game. Potentially making the game harder (Ex: in monster sanctuary you get double jump boots late in blue caves, the second area you go. I’ve had a randomizer that didn’t give me it until late in the game forcing me to use big rock and fly to get around places that I’d normally have double jump for). The opposite can be true too but from my short experience it is unlikely and best to be prepared for the worst outcome

Really glad to see there’s a lot of interest!!

There is still the chance you’d find your own game items, but yeah, Nerthiril is right. Archipelago randomizes in such a way that any item sequence is still completable without using glitches no matter how many people are playing.

Aah yeah, I didn’t want to bring that up for those reasons – I’m not as familiar with a lot of the games that are in alpha/beta or their tech requirements. For this Archipelago, I’d prefer to stick with the Trusted list that’s accessible from the main site, but I’d be open to mixing in some of the in-development games in future playthroughs maybe.

Hey, one game is all you need! That’s awesome that you have so much experience with Final Fantasy! I have a friend who’s similar to you – tons of experience in Civ VI – and he said he found the Archipelago difficulty kinda easy due to getting powerful units early on before their appropriate age. But he enjoyed playing it in Archipelago nonetheless!

Yea, I generally agree that it’s helpful to have a good amount of familiarity with the game you attempt! However, if you don’t think you have that level of experience, I wouldn’t necessarily let that deter you from playing. Part of what I like about doing the Archipelago async is that you can take the game at your own pace – if you’re trying something hard and die a lot, you might be able to come back later with more items and have a much easier time. And there exist Item Trackers for pretty much everything, so you can make sure you’re not missing a location that could potentially have an important item.

Aah sorry! FF14 is still in development for Archipelago! For this round, I’d just like to do games that are on the Stable list, but once we’ve played an Archipelago and more folks here have experience, I’d be open to adding more options that are off the main website.

I’m an avid Archipelago fan. Been playing a lot over time and I usually do the same game every time. Which are Zelda Wind Waker, Hollow Knight and hopefully soon enough Sekiro. Also trying to get Metroid Prime working correctly but am unable so whatever :/. Of course when Silksong rando releases I’ll add that one too.

Also, the link you shared isn’t the full list of game. It’s the full list officially supported and merged into the main branch, but there’s actually a lot of other games that are both fully complete and work perfectly, just aren’t merged into the main branch, other in stable and unstable state but still work pretty well and other in alpha.

The COMPLETE FULL REAL LIST is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iuzDTOAvdoNe8Ne8i461qGNucg5OuEoF-Ikqs8aUQZw/htmlview?usp=sharing&pru=AAABnsd9VTk*xpSIvIVKEVb7oBxc09bpdw#

Note the “Not PRing” stability tag. This is games that are basically completed but will not be merged into the main branch for one reason or another.
In review are, well, in review to be merged into the main branch so they are very stable and basically ready.

Really, just using the official list from the official website is very limiting in term of which game you want to do.

This exist too (??!?!??!?!??!):

Yayaya, I’m aware of the full list and the Games Index that’s on Discord! Like I said previously, this time I want to restrict the game options to just those that are on the website.

We have a number of new players, and the website games have a lot of resources like trackers and clear documentation about how to get set up tech-wise. That’s not always the case for games that are in the broader list. But once we have some more collective experience, for future Archipelagos after this one, I’d be open to expanding the game options to the full list.

Also, ohhhhhh my gosh the Buttplug support is hilarious!

Hmmm I checked full list and availability for Simpsons Hit&Run intrigued me.

This is pretty interesting. How does MS Paint work with this? Lmao

Is certain brushes locked until someone finds them or something?

I love Satisfactory, we should play sometime~
