Bit of a TTRPG gaming horror story

Sort of a rambley post, because I need to get this off my chest.

I have been playing and running TTRPG games for the better part of the last 8 years or so. Most of those with complete strangers on the internet, some of whom I now consider really good friends. There’s something I consider outright magical about communal storytelling that really speaks to me. This session, however was… unsalvageable. Easily the worst session I’ve had in all that time, and that’s saying something!

Let it be known, Fall of Plaguestone (the adventure we were playing) is the very first premade adventure published for Pathfinder 2nd Edition (the system we’re using.) Maybe the designers were figuring out balance, but this module is really out of control. Every single encounter feels like a struggle. The main enemies feel overtuned and present like 70% of all combat encounters. The inciting event is sort of a murder mystery, which can be very hit or miss in my experience. Truth be told I have only heard bad stuff about this module, so I should have known better, but I wasn’t expecting it to be this insane!

The group is also kind of a mess. One player overslept and never showed up. Another one showed up half and hour after starting time, just like the last 3 sessions or so. Also, he’s only half-paying attention to what’s going on, to the point where the GM has to reread the room descriptions straight from the book time and again for him. The other two players are actually quite nice; one of them is brand new to the system with this being his first adventure and… sheesh, I lowkey feel bad for him. The GM is cool, a newer person to the system. However he follows the rules and adventure to the letter with zero deviation, to the point where things feel… stiff. Considering the material he’s following it was always just a recipe for disaster.

Long story short, we spent all session in combat. My character went down during round two to a random crit, so I spent about four hours just… hanging out. Another player went down, leaving the brand new player and the dude who was only half paying attention standing against two ridiculous enemies. I cannot describe how dismaying it was to watch the newer guy try and save the encounter by pretty much listing his every option whenever it was his turn, only for every choice to be shot down by one thing or another. You could hear hope leave his voice and resignation setting in.

Midway through, the other player who got downed just started playing FFXIV (you could see the activity on Discord) while the two players still standing fought. Four hours I spent with my character down just passing my turns. In the end we only survived because the GM started fudging dice hardcore, but everyone could tell what was up. No one said anything, but the energy in the VC was just dreadful.

No TTRPG is better than bad TTRPG, is an idea I fully believe in, so come tomorrow morning I’ll politely leave that group. I feel bad for the GM, because he seems like he’s genuinely trying his best to follow every single mechanic (to a fault IMO, but that’s subjective) but the material he’s using is just dogwater. I also feel bad for the newer player because it’s his first experience with the system and he gets thrown to the wolves right away.

If you get anything out of reading this, I want it to be this: Homie, appreciate your fellow players and GMs. Be grateful if you’re able to participate in a good table and cherish every moment you get to spend telling these stories. It’s not easy to find a group where everyone can jell together and make magic happen, so if and when you find yourself in a group like that… treasure it.

Rant over. Feel free to share any similar horror stories here if you feel like it.

That suuuuucks, Devon. People playing other things while they’re supposed to be engaged in a turn based game with other people is the height of disrespect. Sure, there are lulls in the game, that’s unavoidable, but if your turn comes around and you’ve not been paying attention, it’s just really rude and grinds the pace to a halt. Especially after a DM has made a whole adventure, built a world, helped you with your character etc.

Thankfully I haven’t had any really bad horror stories, but I’ve played with people that have been completely disengaged before.

I’m gonna be so for real, I have run and played with players who do that. So long as they can still keep track of everything and it’s relatively transparent to the rest of the party I don’t mind. Some players’ brain are wired in such a way that they need to stim, or go on their phone or whatever, that I don’t mind. It’s when it becomes a distraction that it grinds my gears.

I think moreso than the being distracted is the fact that players did not respect everyone else’s time. We’re all adults with other stuff going on. We somehow squeeze several hours of our free time just so we can play and then… some jerk decides to forget about his commitment three weeks in a row? Like, dude…

Well, I have only three little “Horror” stories, but not really significant to me but two stories was really significant to the DM i knew. will make short titles and then a story

Note before I start: It was around pandemic time and before full-scale invasion.

1st: DM’s “unique storyline”

In 2020, I was with some friends who invited me to the small “D&D hub” where was “Veterans and new players are playing D&D” and such. (Bear with me), and after couple listenings to the game, I decided to join one of the games who just announced to play with “Unique storyline”. The beginning was… totally disaster, were my character, a Tabaxi rogue, was killed IN THE FIRST SESSION. ON THE LEVEL ONE. Although the DM was completely new, he didn’t made in considiration to save the game for me.
I wanted to continue, and made a Warrior or Paladin, that part I don’t remeber. Then our party went to expedition to some tomb and were teleported to unknown place… started to explore some village, then other stuff. After 2-3 sessions, I started to feel were something is off with the campaign, and turns out, DM moved us to Curse of Strahd campaign (Because I did started googling the maps and stuff). And after 3-5 sessions and one boss fight, the mood in the party and with DM was depressingly sour. And we called off the campaign, due DM’s depression.

2nd: My “peak” game and shit brewing behind the scenes.

The same server, different people. Including my friends. I was listening to one of the “Top games” where my friend was DM’ing for a while and it had couple “Veteran Roleplayers” in the group. The setting was honestly interesting, with good and evil gods, good character development and stuff. I got invited in the game, because one or two people dropped out, and I was totally excited, nervously made a character (Dragon Warrior),
And joined to the group of cats (Because it mainly called “Cat game”, and it’s funny: They completely refused to call it a Furry game, despite having talking anthromorphic characters.) Mage (Male, One of the Veterans) and priest-warlock ( Female, who also DM’s Friend)… and Barbarian (He was okayish). (With me also joined a rat rogue, he didn’t had significant role)
On my first session there… when was my turn, I started roleplaying like the life was depended on it and went like that before game was called off month later. I completely impressed “Veterans” by my roleplay.

One red-flag and probably most… it was hours long flirting roleplay between mage and priest-warlock, right before the end of sessions. When they started to do romantic (I know I know, let people do romantic stuff), it was alright, then it’s just got too long.. like 1-3 hours long.
Second and probably the last red-flag before the game was called off, was were I got pressured into romantic relationship with the NPC, and was pressured by the those two, who did romantic roleplay a lot.

Remember the name of the title? Shit brewing behind the scenes?
Priest-Warlock was friend of DM (which I mentioned above), was also flirting with the Mage guy, IRL. DM was totally upset when her friend (as childhood friend), didn’t spend time with her, rather having flirting and having relationship with the Mage guy. Which for DM was a conflict of interest. In retrospective: Dumb teen-adult being dumb teen-adult.

Officially campaign was called off due Depression and pressure of making stuff within the week and I suspect the conflict of interest also was the reason.

3rd: I caused to death of campaign.

The last campaign where I was on… Wasn’t even on D&D gameplay, rather other gameplay setting.. which I totally forgot about it.

Same DM from the second story. She decided to make another campaign of “We are witchers like” story. And the system is like our backstories are intertwined with each other one way or another. We set up the base, and after couple missions, at the heated moment, i became really agressive at one point, because I wasn’t sure how I was supposed to act on the situation. Then DM made a cliffhanger… and killed the campaign and DM’ing for good (I guess?). Since then I didn’t spoke to DM to this day.

Last edit: And from that moment I didn’t had any D&D since.
