I noticed there’s a 30 character minimum to reply to post. However, many time I want to answer someone and I don’t really need to say more but because it doesn’t have 30 character I gotta think of some random stuff to add to get up to 30 character. Pretty annoying tbh.
it sometimes feels like an english paper where you need to have a certain amount of words so you just start adding words like ye old english
I know right?! ← Less than 30 character
And this proves my exact point -_-
Maybe lower it to 15 Characters? I’m not in favor of removing it outright but shorter responses being possible would be nice.
My answer above would still be more than 15 character :/
I kinda have to agree. It is a bit annoying, especially if I’m like 2 characters off, but I’ve already got down what I want to say. I don’t like having to add extra stuff cuz I feel like it devalues the message a bit. Halving it to 15 I think would work better.
Having it at all discourages shorter messages as intended, but having it too long discourages posting a basic reply. I suppose shortening it could work, as long as the posts in practice don’t end up becoming what can already be achieved with reactions.
It feels like was put it back when you got size coins for replies, to discourage less farming with them, i may be wrong though
It was introduced after the coins but not because of the coins. It was done to combat a spam of short responses that could have just been reactions.
I agree it can be annoying to be a few characters off and then need to rethink what you wrote or add more, but in the end you gotta choose a cutoff and you will always run into it no matter what. I personally believe the bit of thinking you’re forced to do to meet the number is actually the intended effect in that it makes you think about what you’re writing. If it leads to people just adding random garbage though, that’s of course not desireable.
I can consider shortening the requirement but I don’t believe we’ll remove it. We just kept seeing too many “Thanks!” messages cluttering up threads, sometimes multiple in a row. I believe a reply should add something to the conversation, and ones that won’t even fill a decent sentence can’t really do that.
Especially in those situations quoting is a great solution, it both ups the character count and allows you to reply to multiple people at once, for example to thank them. This way you’re not spamming a thread because you wanna reply to each person, and your replies become longer and more significant.
All in all I personally think it’s something to get used to and as you use forums more and get used to the customs and features it will cease to be an annoyance. We already have our Posting Best Practises but I think we can still do more to help people. So personally I vouch for this route to cure the problem rather than lower the limit and reintroduce super short replies.
In the end though if the community believes the requirement must be lowered we’ll go with that.
I vote for keeping the character limit as is right now. I think it’s in the spirit of platforms like this not to clutter threads with super short replies. For a regular “thank you” and “Agreed!” messages I feel like reactions should suffice. Let’s see what everyone else thinks though.
